Day 1. Early afternoon transfer from Adelaide to Barossa Valley. Accommodation of the highest standard in the homestead at “Wings Barossa Bird & Bush Retreat”, an exclusive bush retreat in the Barossa ranges only 1 hour from Adelaide. Slate and polished timber floors, antique and leather furnishings enhance your stay.
Spend the afternoon leisurely taking in the abundant birdlife by using the many well-marked walking trails in the gently rolling hills and valleys that make up this unique 170 acre retreat. Enjoy an evening glass of wine on the verandah by the lake while watching water birds and kangaroos.
This conservation reserve property is home to beautiful old gumtrees, yuccas and a large bird list including Adelaide Rosella, Red-browed Firetail, White-throated Treecreeper, Australasian Grebe, Square-tailed Kite and many more.
Dinner will be delivered to your doorstep.
Day 2.. As you awake to the morning bird chorus you'll be amazed by the fully stocked fridge containing supplies for a scrumptious breakfast. After breakfast your guide will collect you for a full day of birdwatching in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley. Your guide has intimate knowledge of the area and will discuss your requirements with you, targeting the day to the birds (for example, Adelaide Rosella, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, rails and crakes, raptors, and mammals such as Eastern Brown Bandicoot, Koala) you wish to observe. Lunch will be taken at a local winery followed by a vineyard tour and winetasting. This evening your guide will accompany you to one of the exquisite local restaurants for dinner and return you to your accommodation.
Day 3. After breakfast your guide will collect you for a leisurely drive to the Clare Valley, visiting the impressive Murray river on the way, and a patch of mallee scrubland for some of the drier-country species such as Chestnut Quail-thrush, Southern Scrubrobin and Gilbert's Whistler.
We may even come across a Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. After lunch and optional wine-tasting in Clare you check in at your accommodation at the unique, heritage-listed Bungaree Station. We'll explore the bird and wine delights the Clare Valley has to offer before returning to Bungaree for a home-cooked 3-course dinner.
Day 4. You will be guaranteed to be impressed by the unique nature of Bungaree Station and its beautifully restored heritage buildings. What's even more amazing is that it is still a fully operational sheep station! This morning, after breakfast, you'll get the opportunity to witness first-hand the workings of this historic station complex, established in 1841, including Station Store, Homestead Gardens, Church and Woolshed as we stroll around the property with its wildlife, birds, deer, kangaroos and farm animals. You'll reluctantly leave for a short drive back to Adelaide, picking up any bird species you still need on the way. Your guide will return you to your accommodation (or the airport) in Adelaide shortly after lunch.
